Kathleen's Biography

For a while, I lived a conventional lifestyle. I graduated high school, and married while living in Farmington, Connecticut.

After my three sons started school, I returned to college and earned a B.S. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Connecticut. For a few years, I worked as a software engineer, consulting on applications ranging from submarine combat systems to biological research databases. Weekends and vacations were spent sailing on the waters of Long Island Sound.

As an avid sailor and licensed charter captain, the itch to sail away into the sunset soon became to strong to resist. When our little boys became college students, my husband and I sold our house and furniture, waved good-bye to shocked friends and relatives, and moved aboard our sailboat. We headed south along the Atlantic coast via the Intracoastal Waterway, exploring Chesapeake Bay, Pamlico Sound, historic cities, out-of-the-way fishing villages, unspoiled marshes, and dozens of quiet, moonlit anchorages teeming with wildlife. After that first adventure, we were hooked on a cruising life.

Since then, we have spend many years roaming the Southern U.S. coastline, exploring the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and enjoying the tropical islands of the Caribbean and the offshore islands of South America. We have cruised as far north as Gloucester, Massachusetts and as far south as Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, east to Trinidad and Tobago, and west to Curacao.

For a year, our boat was docked in Titusville, Florida. From our aft deck, we watched space shuttle launches from the Kennedy Space Center. After surviving Hurricanes Charley, Francis, and Jean, we traveled north. Now, our boat is docked in Virginia, and we're sailing on Chesapeake Bay.

We've recently adopted a sheltie from Sheltie Haven Sheltie Rescue in Maryland. Our previous sheltie loved to swim and was a great sailor. Eve will start swimming lessons soon.

I began my writing career with non-fiction articles. But my husband and I were sailing to lush, exotic islands under starry skies, walking on the most beautiful, white-sand beaches in the world, watching fiery sunsets, smelling nutmeg drying in the sunshine, breathing tangy salt air, eating juicy pineapples fresh from the fields, and feeling the wind blowing through our hair. How could my thoughts not turn to romance?

One day, while we were anchored in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the boat rocking gently in the trade winds, I started writing about a charter yacht crewed by a salty captain and a land-lubber chef. That novel, A Trade Wind Season, was released in hardcover by Avalon Books two years later.

Since then, I've written two romantic suspense novels set in the Bahamas, Secret Stranger and Deadly Paradise, Beyond Paradise, a multi-cultural romance about a SCUBA instructor, and River of Fear, a romantic suspense with a Navy SEAL hero set in coastal Georgia. And I've discovered I love writing romance!
